Tony Waldrop was recently named as Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Waldrop, a Columbus, N.C. native, was a Morehead Scholar and track star at Carolina in the 1970s. He was most recently a professor of molecular and integrative physiology and vice chancellor for research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and also has been an interim graduate school dean there. At the University of Illinois, he led the efforts to create a university-associated research park

Waldrop's research has been supported by agencies including the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association (AHA). AHA selected him as an Established Investigator. At Illinois, Waldrop was a University Scholar, the premier recognition accorded to faculty by their colleagues. His research interests are hypertension, developmental neurobiology and the effects of hypoxia (low oxygen) on brainstem neurons. He has published more that one hundred peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters. His faculty appointment at UNC-CH is as a professor of cell and molecular physiology.

The primary commitment of the Office of the Vice Chancellor (OVCR) is to support the University's research mission and the graduate programs that sustain it. Toward that end, OVCR assists individual faculty members in their research endeavors, encourages interdisciplinary activities across campus and promotes excellence within all our graduate programs. OVCR also plays an important role in the University's relationships with foundations, federal agencies, corporations, and the state and federal government. Specifically, OVCR assists faculty research efforts by providing startup and matching funds to support new programs and initiatives. In addition, this office provides administrative support for research activities through the Office of Research Services, the Office of Technology Development, the Office of Information and Communications, the Proposal Development Initiative, and the Howard W. Odum Institute for Research in Social Science. Nine centers and institutes were added to the offices that report to the Vice Chancellor. Vice Chancellor Waldrop will also provide leadership to the Horace Williams project.
